As big and brash as its subject, Ink makes headlines with its colorful take on the birth of the British tabloid industry and its prescient prediction of the power of social media, resulting in six 2019 Tony nods, including Best Play. Set in swinging late ‘60s London, James Graham’s Faustian drama finds the Mephistophelian Rupert Murdoch (Tony nominee Bertie Carvel) manipulating traditional Fleet Street journalist Larry Lamb (Jonny Lee Miller of Elementary) into selling his proverbial soul for a splashy new style of news reporting. But then Lamb’s got to lead his ragtag gang of underdog reporters on a mission to slaughter the staid competition. The Wall Street Journal calls this MTC drama at the Samuel Friedman Theatre in New York “indelibly entertaining,” while Ben Brantley of The New York Times has deemed it a Critic’s Pick, dubbing it “invigorating, abounding in adrenaline,” and calling out “the exquisite Bertie Carvel … and the terrific Jonny Lee Miller.” Director Rupert Goold also scored a Tony nod for his imaginative, industrial-inspired production.
